About 6 years ago (yikes) I was in college and running around the Boston Fens with my discman (double yikes). I used to bring favorite cd’s with me and listen to them in their entirety on my run. Patty Griffin – Living With Ghosts. Amy Grant – Heart In Motion. David Wilcox – Big Horizon. Faith Hill – Cry. Michael Jackson – everything he’s ever done. Rebecca Lynn Howard – Forgive. Tonic – Head On Straight. Cyndi Thomson – My World… and CAROLYN DAWN JOHNSON – ROOM WITH A VIEW. I absolutely fell in love with melodies, rhythm, phrasing, language and how all of those things can be used so uniquely to distinguish one artist or band from another.
Fast forward 4 years. I’m in the first year of my second publishing deal and am spending the day with a good friend of mine who makes the tragic mistake of mentioning that she wrote with CDJ the day before. My jaw hits the floor and I let out a deafening “WHAT?!?” That meant that she still wrote with people and, unfortunately for CDJ but fortunately for the stalker fan in me, my friend knew where she lived. I didn’t pursue the late night drive-by that my super-fan heart desired, but opted instead for the more legal route of immediately call my publisher and asking what the chances were of him getting me an appointment with her.
A few months later we sit in a writing room and CDJ solidifies her top 5 position on my ladder of favorite people. I can’t say enough good things about the writer, artist, wife, mother, and friend she is. Truly one of the best.
Carolyn recorded the song we wrote that day on her new record due out this year, and released it as her first single! Today I found out that our song is #6 overall in Canada, and #1 on the all-Canada charts. What an awesome thing for me to tell to my 20 year old self that my 27 year old self gets to experience. Just awesome
